JOAN BROWN'S B&B - VICTORIA ISLAND, BC

May 20, 2000
---------
The first Bed & Breakfast we ever stayed in was Joan Brown's B&B on Victoria Island in British Columbia. Our son Trent (age 26) and his fiance, Amy (25), wanted to host a weekend for Amy's parents and us so we could meet before their wedding on October 20, 2000 in Madison, Wisconsin. At the time, Trent and Amy were living in downtown Seattle; Amy's parents, Bob and Karen, were living in East Troy, Wisconsin; and Bob (age 55) and I (age 55) were living in Torrance, California.
---------
We were excited about meeting Amy's parents and also about traveling to Seattle and then to Victoria Island, places we hadn't been before. When we arrived from the ferry, we were impressed with the large stately home behind the wrought iron gate, even though the sign on the gate said, "For Sale". Joan Brown was larger than life, a robust, outgoing and welcoming figure. She showed us around the first floor and then to our rooms. We each chose which room we liked and ours was enormous, pink and green Laura Ashley-like, and beautiful. I felt like we were staying in an old Victorian or antebellum home, complete with an old-fashioned, but serviceable bathroom. I especially loved the loveseat and old mirror-front armoire, which was our closet.
---------
Our visit was enhanced by Joan's tales of her life while we sipped sherry in one of the parlor's that evening. The next morning we were served an enormous, beautiful breakfast in at the huge table in the dining room. It was Mother's Day and everything was perfect! After breakfast I wished I had had time to lounge in the lovely, bright yellow library. This room was literally filled with books and with the sun pouring in the large, lead glass windows, it was the perfect place to curl up with a cup of tea and read a good book. Unfortunately there wasn't time on this trip.

I would recommend Joan Brown's B&B to anyone and hope to one day return myself to enjoy the hospitality once again.
