I LOVE BED and BREAKFASTS . . . USUALLY !

This blog is dedicated to lodgings we have experienced during our travels. I was going to concentrate only on B&B's, but have decided to expand it to include small, upscale inns and hotels too, as those have always been our preferred accommodations.

But our son Todd, and his wife Stephanie, had been staying at B&B's for years and always seemed pleased with their experiences. I was unconvinced because I had visions of staying in a stranger's home and eating breakfast with a bunch of people I didn't know. I liked the anonymity of a hotel. But Bob and I started going to Bed & Breakfasts in May 2000 when our daughter-in-law-to-be at that point, Amy, reserved rooms for us and her parents at a Bed & Breakfast in British Columbia. We had a great time and absolutely loved this place and decided we should consider staying at B&B's too.

Since I was concerned with the quality of B&B's, though, I began using a Select Registry book as a guide. It listed more than 400 luxury inns and B&B's in North America and I thought I would be assured of high quality, upscale properties, sight unseen, every single time. Until our stay at The Albermarle Inn in Asheville, NC, I had not been disappointed. But during our four-day trip to North Carolina from February 18-21, we stayed at, or stopped by, six Select Registry B&B's and we left them with mixed reactions. In fact, we would not have stayed at some of them. So now I'm not depending on the Select Registry guide so much and need to find another source for choosing excellent travel accommodations.
